Cabarrus Bank & Trust Honors Teacher of the Year and Outstanding Business

Tuesday, May 10th 2005 - Albemarle, NC - Shareholders of Uwharrie Capital Corp, the parent company of Cabarrus Bank & Trust were treated to entertainment and special recognitions at the company's 2005 annual meeting.

Performances by the Anson High School Marching Bearcat Band and the Albemarle High School Advanced Women's Chorus opened the community meeting which included special recognitions and awards given to Teachers and Businesses representing the best of Anson, Cabarrus and Stanly counties.

Cabarrus County's Teacher of the Year, Keith Maletta, an English teacher at Central Cabarrus High School was presented with a drawing by local artist Grey Carle depicting his field of teaching and a $1,000 stipend.

Alex Rankin, Cabarrus Bank & Trust board chair presented the award. "Keith began his career in 1992", he said. "Keith moved to North Carolina in August of 1993 where he found his home in the Cabarrus County school system. Keith chose teaching because it was the only job he knew where he could affect his community in a positive way everyday. He wanted a noble profession and after talking with his sister, an elementary teacher in buffalo new york, he decided that teaching was the profession for him. He chose english as his field of teaching because he always loved to read and write."

Keith's principal, Chris Lowder, had this to say: "he is the most creative teacher I have ever worked with, he does not want his students bored in his classroom. He is a very humorous individual and uses this trait to teach his students. He tricks’ them into learning. They will leave his english class thinking they just had fun for an hour and a half and yet they learned all about Romeo and Juliet, in the process. He and four other teachers took the top 35 - 40 seniors to disney world for “graduation night. They just returned from this trip and some of the teachers take the trip one time and do not go again, Keith takes the seniors every year!"

Cindy Beane, Uwharrie Capital Corp board chair spoke of local businesses as a vital part of the economic integrity and success of the region, we serve as a financial services company. "Hometown businesses provide jobs for local residents who, in turn, participate in church activities, coach youth sports, volunteer for fire departments and spend their hard earned dollars at local businesses; thus creating wealth for that community."

Ritchie Services Company, of Concord, was recognized as Cabarrus County's 2005 outstanding business honoree. Jack and Jennifer Ritchie received the award, a wall mounted Grandfather Clock, in appreciation of the many contributions made to the community.

Cabarrus Bank & Trust CEO Pat Horton presented the award. "It is a pleasure to honor Ritchie Services Company as this years outstanding business," she said. "Having grown up in Cabarrus County, Jack Ritchie knew he wasn't being true to himself working in the fast-paced world of telecommunications. After traveling and being on the road, he and his wife Jennifer decided to pursue opportunities that would allow him to become more involved in his community and pursue his passion of serving people. Fortunately Jack was able to partner with an existing business and utilize the electrical engineering degree he had obtained years earlier. In 1999, Jack became owner of what is now Ritchie Services Company, a heating ventilation - air conditioning company."

"His business is built on providing a caring family type atmosphere for his 15 employees. He is committed to providing the most up to date training available. These folks receive up to 50 hours a year training to assure that they are providing the best services and products to their customers. Presently, Ritchie Services Company serves the residential market. This is a seasonal business, so Jack is looking for ways to expand into a more diversified market. His plans are to begin to offer his services to the commercial sector of the industry."

By working together, we can continue to enhance the well being of the counties we serve and make a difference in our community.
