Anson Bank & Trust Honors Teacher of the Year and Outstanding Business

Tuesday, May 10th 2005 - Albemarle, NC - Shareholders of Uwharrie Capital Corp, the parent company of Anson Bank & Trust, were treated to entertainment and special recognitions at the company's 2005 annual meeting.

Performances by the Anson High School Marching Bearcat Band and the Albemarle High School Advanced Women's Chorus opened the community meeting which included special recognitions and awards given to Teachers and Businesses representing the best of Anson, Cabarrus and Stanly counties.

Anson County's Teacher of the Year, Sherry Lisk, a first grade teacher at Wadesboro Primary School was presented with a drawing by local artist Grey Carle depicting her field of teaching and a $1,000 stipend.

Emmett Patterson, Anson Bank & Trust board chair presented the award. "It's an honor to present this award", he said. "Sherry started having her own aspirations to teach when in the 4th grade, she realized that the teaching manuals, at her aunts house, actually had the answers in the back! From that point forward, whenever she visited her aunt, she poured through the teaching manuals. An additional influence to Sherry’s decision to become an educator was her 5th grade teacher, Ms. Huntley. In Ms. Huntley’s class, Sherry recalls how laughter and singing created such a nurturing environment. She saw how happy teaching made Ms. Huntley and wanted to experience that type of joy with her own classroom one day."

Sherry's principal, Betsy Ammons, had this to say: "I'm so proud of Sherry. She is truly a wonderful teacher. She loves her job but most of all she loves her children. One morning I arrived at school at about 6:45 and Sherry was already on campus. I saw her red suburban as i drove in. I left the school the evening before around 7:00 after Sherry helped me write a recommendation for a young teacher who we wanted to nominate as elementary math teacher in Anson County. That is Sherry, always at work, thinking of children, supporting her fellow teachers and principal. Sherry is grade level chairperson and chair of our committee on using data and getting results. I could go on and on…..she truly loves her job."

Cindy Beane, Uwharrie Capital Corp board chair spoke of local businesses as a vital part of the economic integrity and success of the region, we serve as a financial services company. "Hometown businesses provide jobs for local residents who, in turn, participate in church activities, coach youth sports, volunteer for fire departments and spend their hard earned dollars at local businesses; thus creating wealth for that community."

Anson Community Hospital, of Wadesboro, was recognized as Anson County's 2005 outstanding business honoree. Dr. Fred Thompson received the award, a wall mounted Grandfather Clock, in appreciation of the many contributions made to the community.

Anson Bank & Trust CEO Jim Strayhorn presented the award. "It is a pleasure to honor Anson Community Hospital as this years outstanding business", he said. "The hospital has been operating 24-hours a day, 7 days a week since 1913 and at one time it was the only hospital between Charlotte and Wilmington. The hospital currently employs 415 people making it one of the largest employers in Anson County and one of the largest payrolls in the county; they truly are part of the economic fabric."

"Anson Community Hospital is considered a "primary care provider" offering family and internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery and an emergency room staffed 24-hours a day by board certified physicians. The hospital operates a total of 125 beds, 30 at the hospital and 95 at the Lilly Bennett Nursing Center. They have one of the largest parish nurse programs in North Carolina serving over 50 churches. The hospital’s mobile health screening clinic is critical to our community where many individuals do not have health insurance. In operation since 1998 the mobile health screening clinic screened over 6,000 individuals in 2004. Their slogan is “Since 1913, Taking Care Of The Neighborhood” and they are certainly doing just that."

By working together, we can continue to enhance the well being of the counties we serve and make a difference in our community.
