County Veterans Honored

May 31st 2005 - Albemarle, NC - As America paused Monday
to remember those who have served in our military, Stanly
County did likewise honoring World War II veterans with patriotic
music, great food and fellowship. At noon Monday, 230 veterans
broke bread together at a luncheon sponsored by Bank
of Stanly and Strategic
Investment Group and hosted by Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Following a placement of flags from the
various military branches by WW II veterans - James Almond
(Air Corps), Everette Ingram (Army), William Mabry (Navy),
Jim Kirk (Marines) and Robert Morgan Jr. (Coast Guard) -
the veterans heard from Uwharrie Capital Corp President and
CEO Roger Dick.
"On behalf of the entire community
it's a pleasure to be in the presence of such an august community
of people. A lot of your friends are not here today... you
left them on the battlefield. I've known most of you all
my adult life but I didn't always know I was walking among
so many heroes. Because of you we celebrate a lot of holidays
in this country but we couldn't celebrate any of them if
we didn't celebrate Memorial Day."
In a heartwarming presentation Don Carrick
shared the story from the Civil War and the tradition of
TAPS followed by its playing by bugler and WW II veteran
Don Hudson.
Stanly Community College President Dr. Mike
Taylor explained SCC's initiative of videotaping WW II veterans
and their individual stories from the war. The interviews
are conducted either by Taylor or two other SCC staff, Dr
Russ Sharples, dean of students, or Michelle Peifer, assistant
to the president. To date, 60 WW II veterans have been interviewed.
"All of you have stories," Taylor
said. "We encourage you to come in and share your story
for the generations that follow."
Copies of the tapes are given to the veteran,
the National Library in Washington D.C., the State Archives,
SCC Library and Stanly County Library.
